LearnStatamic.com is Now Free!

Thanks to all of our supporters we are now able to open up our training course, learnstatamic.com, for free!

The course has several hours of videos detailing a full site build, step-by-step. The lessons haven’t stopped yet, in fact I just added a new one yesterday.

The back story

This course was a bit of an anomaly, if I’m being perfectly honest. Last December business was slow, the team was on holiday, and we hit a few unexpected expenses as a company. Selling video courses and e-books was (still is) all the rage, and I thought I would try my hand at it. An extra source of revenue is never a bad thing, right? And to be perfectly honest, it worked pretty well.

I cranked out a bunch of detailed videos, we had 60 people register for the course, the bills were paid, and all was well.

Fast-forward almost 6 months and the situation is a little bit different. We have this great content that only a small portion of our users have seen. We’ve continued to get a (very) slow trickle of people into the course, but at this point that only just barely covers the ongoing monthly cost of the Teachable account, so I decided the best way forward was treat this like a crowd-funded course and release it to the public.

We cut our costs, everyone gets the content, and more people have a chance to fall in love with Statamic. It’s a pretty good plan for going foward.

The hidden side of the story

I believe it’s in everyone’s best interest to be as open and transparent as possible. So with that in mind, I’m comfortable saying that if I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t. At least, I would have tried harder to find another solution. In hindsight, charging for quality learning material, for a commercial product, as the owner of that product, has an undeniably icky feeling to it. If Statamic was open source it would be a different story entirely. But it’s not.

Disappointed in myself

You live and you learn. If a mistake doesn’t kill your business (which it usually doesn’t), you just keep rolling. So that’s what we’re going to do! The videos are great, the feedback is positive, and we’re marching ahead!

If you’ve purchased Learn Statamic and feel you didn’t get your money’s worth, just let me know. I’ll take care of you. We’ll always put you first before ourselves.

And for everyone else, enjoy the content! I’m working on another batch of videos, so we’ll keep loading it up as long as we can. Eventually we will likely move them into the docs, our Vimeo account, and make them even more accessible. We want everyone to know how useful Statamic is, so I’m going to get to work on all the things I can think of that further that goal. ❤️
