Edit page button caching for logged_in vs non-logged_in users

I am trying to have an "edit" button for each page on the front end. It was working (but slow) until I enabled cache (both half and full). After struggling a bit, I think it makes sense, Statamic (laravel?) has no issue caching a page while a user is logged in and serving that same page with the edit button html because it thinks its the same "/about-us" page. I've tried the static-caching page in the docs where is suggests excluding pages and updating the .htaccess file when using full caching but that isn't helping. Is there a best-practice here? (ideally basic/simple, I'm still a php rookie :) )
