Image Cropping is Here

Image Cropping is Here

Jack McDade 2 min read

You know that moment when a client uploads a perfectly good photo — except it's got way too much parking lot on the left side and a random elbow on the right? And then they ask you to "just crop it real quick" and you're like… this is a CMS, not Photoshop.

Well. Now it kind of is. At least in this one, very specific way.

Ratio, Crop, Done

Statamic now has built-in image cropping — right in the asset editor, right where you're already working. No more round-tripping to an external image editor just to chop off someone's elbow.

Here's what you get:

  • Freeform cropping — drag the handles, get exactly what you want
  • Aspect ratio presets — lock to 16:9, 4:3, 1:1, or whatever your design demands
  • Orientation flipping — horizontal, vertical, horizontal again

The whole thing is powered by cropper.js and feels snappy. No loading spinners, no waiting around — just grab, drag, crop.

Save As New or Replace

When you finish cropping, you get a choice — save as a brand new image (with a timestamp so nothing gets overwritten) or replace the original entirely. Either way the image cache gets busted automatically, so no stale thumbnails.
